Study Tour 2023-24

STUDY TOUR

The Department of Zoology of Assumption College, Changanassery had attended a study  tour from 18-12-2023 to 20-12-2023. The places visited includes two Research Institutes; Coir Board, Alappuzha, Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) , Ernakulam and Munnar, a hill station which is located in the Idukki district.

 

Day-1 (18/12/2023)

 

     The journey started from the college at morning 9:00 am by Expo travels with 32 students and two teachers. We reached the Coir board Industry at 10:15 am. The Coir Board featured an exhibition hall showcasing a diverse range of coir products. We were able to explore and learn about various coir-based items such as mats, carpets, ropes, and handicrafts.  There was demonstrations explaining the traditional and modern processes of coir extraction, yarn spinning, weaving, and manufacturing of different coir products. There were also sales outlets where visitors could purchase various coir products directly from the source, supporting the local artisans and the coir industry. It was a great experience to learn about the evolution and uses of coir.

Then, after having lunch we headed to The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Ernakulam and reached their by almost 2:45 pm. CMFRI housed various research departments focused on different aspects of marine biology, aquaculture, stock assessment, fishery management, marine biodiversity, and more. We were taken to numerous well-equipped laboratories which are used for conducting advanced research in areas such as fish nutrition, fish genetics, marine ecology, and biotechnology. And we were able to see a large collection of specimens of aquatic organisms. Before leaving there was a video footage which was shown to us summing up all the facts and achievements of CMFRI.

After that we moved on to Munnar and reached our destination at 10:00 pm. After having dinner, we checked in at Icebergs hotel.

 

Day 2 ( 19/12/2023)

 

 The activities of second day started by reaching the first destination which was Mattupetty dam by 9:00am. We reached there by traveling through picturesque tea plantations and winding roads surrounded by lush greenery. The journey itself offered stunning views.

 Later by 10:30am we visited Munnar top station known for its panoramic views, this is the highest point in Munnar. It offered stunning vistas of the Western Ghats and the valley below. Clouds often descended there, creating a surreal atmosphere.

By 12:15pm we reached Echo point. As we approached Echo Point, we were greeted by breathtaking views of lush greenery, mist-covered hills, and serene lakes. The scenic beauty was captivating and offered excellent photo opportunities. The main attraction of Echo Point is the natural echo phenomenon. When we shouted out or make a loud sound towards the hills, it bounced back as an echo, which was a fascinating experience

Then, after having lunch we went on a jeep safari experience. We arrived at Ripples waterfall at 2:30 PM, which was captivated by the soothing sounds of rushing water and surrounded by the enchanting beauty of the landscape which made it a memorable destination.

At 3:56 PM, we reached Thookkupalam , which holds significance, for its natural beauty and cultural importance. We were directed to jump, contributing to the collective effort in making it to move, which adding a fun and interactive element to our exploration.

Followed by our journey from Thookkupalam, at 4:12 PM, we reached at Ponnmudi Dam, where the tranquil waters and scenic landscapes unfolded before us, marking another highlight in our exploration.

As a continuation of our exploration from Ponnmudi Dam, at 4:39 PM, we reached the captivating viewpoint at Nadukani, where the horizon unfolded in a breathtaking panorama, leaving us in a awe of nature’s vast beauty.

Followed by our journey from Nadukani viewpoint , at 5:36 PM we reached at Chathurangapara viewpoint, where we witnessed the sun set , casting a warm golden glow over Chathurangappara, creating a picturesque scene to conclude our Day’s adventure .

Day-3 (20/12/23)   

 On our final day, the journey began with a departure from the hotel at 7:30 AM, following a satisfying breakfast. By 8:46 AM, we arrived at Eravikulum National Park, where the captivating sights included the graceful Nilgiri Tahr, a vibrant garden showcasing plants of Strobilanthus kunthiana, and the refreshing springs of underground water. It was a day filled with natural wonders and unforgettable moments.

At 6:45 PM, we reached Assumption College, which marked the end of our journey.
