Year of Establishment - 1958
When the Department of Zoology celebrated its Diamond jubilee in 2017, it was a cherished journey that started 60 years ago in 1958 launching the B. Sc. Degree program in Zoology and Professor Annamma George as the Head of the Department. Later in 1998, the department included a Vocational Degree Course with Zoology as the core subject and Food Microbiology and Biochemistry as Vocational and Complementary subjects respectively. Our department shows its brilliancy across the globe through the alumnae, whose excellent career testify to its merit. Today the department offers two undergraduate courses (B Sc Zoology Model I & B Sc Zoology Model II), complementary course (For B Sc Botany & BSc Family and Community Science), Open Course (Human health & Sex education), and an elective course (Pest & Waste Management for Wellness).
The department has a well set ‘Zoology Museum’ with a good collection of bottled and stuffed specimens of non-chordates and chordates in addition to two highly equipped zoology labs, a microbiology lab and a project & computer lab. The department library is helpful to widen student’s knowledge regarding Zoology. The Aquariums in the zoology class rooms accentuate its liveliness. The department employs varied and cutting edge technologies to impart knowledge and propel learning to its pupil, that includes, but is not limited to, classroom lectures using audio-visual aids, social media channels, laboratory demonstrations, field trips, visit to scientific institutions, study tours, nature camps, as its key teaching methodologies.
Our vibrant and inspiring group of teachers aim for highest possible standards of excellence and have been instrumental in the fructification of couple of UGC funded projects, five KSCSTE funded student projects, all in the span of the past four years. Apart from MOUs with Gandhi Smaraka Grama Seva Kendram, Alappuzha and Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), Kottayam since 2018, the department has an active Zoology Association (OIKOS) and a Friends of Fauna (FOF) Nature club and Biodiversity club. In 2021, another MOU wassigned with UniBiosys Biotech Research Labs, to enrich research skills among students. The Department also has been publishing a manuscript magazine OIKOS since 1998 to nurture the skills of its students. The Department has been publishing an annual newsletter since 2018 covering all the key departmental activities. The zoology department has bagged the “Best Zoology Association Award” and the “Best Manuscript Magazine Award” instituted by The Zoological Society of Kerala, many times.
The students are also encouraged to develop soft skills and extracurricular activities by facilitating trainings like Certificate course “Apiculture”. Intra-collegiate and intercollegiate academic and non-academic programs, power point presentation competitions (Voyage) and alumna lectures are conducted frequently to inculcate and develop in young minds, a scientific curiosity and reading habit. Our Friday charity collections initiated by students not only extends a helping hand to the needy but also imbibes in our students the culture of giving back to the society.
The Zoology department in addition to holding its rich tradition of inculcating good values in students, also strives to accomplish the very motto of the college “Empowerment of Women” as one of our core objective. We believe the knowledge imparted will work as enablers to empower our young women and prepare them to carve out a better future.
