ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

Date: November 29,2024

As part of the Unnat Bharath Abhiyan (UBA), a national program aimed at rural development through higher education, UBA Core committee members of Assumption College Autonomous, Changanassery have planned a social outreach program focusing on waste segregation and management. As first step, all the second year undergraduate students were divided into five groups, each assigned to one of the five adopted villages (Kumarankary, Mampuzhakary, Paittupakka, Vettithuruthu and Eara).

As a preparatory phase, an orientation program was organized for the second year undergraduate students with the goal of introducing them to the academic, social and environmental responsibilities. The inaugural programme was organized on 29th November 2024 in William Hall at 1 pm.  The session began with a formal welcome address by Dr. Reshma R S, UBA Coordinator and then Vice Principal, Dr. Rani Maria Thomas addressed the session. The Vice-Principal’s address set the tone for the orientation program, reminding students that their time at the college would not only be about academic growth but also about becoming responsible global citizens. Dr. Whyni Gopi, IQAC Coordinator briefed the students on UBA and the activities planned under UBA in this academic year.

Following the inaugural address, the program continued with an orientation session on Waste Segregation and Management, delivered by Shri. Manoj Madhavan, District Project Coordinator, Socio Economic Unit Foundation and Harithakarmasena Kottayam. The resource person began the session by explaining the global impact of waste mismanagement. He then focused on the importance of waste segregation, which involves separating waste into different categories such as biodegradable, recyclable, and non-recyclable waste. He emphasized that segregating waste at the source reduces pollution, conserves resources and makes recycling and composting processes more efficient. He also suggested organizing awareness drives and events to further promote the importance of waste management. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by a student representative followed by National Anthem.

The students left the session with a clear understanding of the significance of waste segregation and the practical steps they can take to contribute to a cleaner, greener society. The orientation provided them not only with academic guidance but also with a sense of social responsibility towards the environment.
