Law Literacy Week – “Child rights protection: Laws and Legal Frameworks”

Date: November 19,2024

On 19th November 2024, the NSS unit of Assumption College Changanassery was called to attend an informative class on Child rights titled 'Child rights protection: Laws and Legal Frameworks', which was conducted by Anjumol Skaria (Protection Officer at the Institutional Care District Child Protection Unit Kottayam). The program commenced at 2:00 pm at the Seminar Hall of Assumption College Changanassery with the NSS anthem sung by the NSS choir. The welcome speech was delivered by NSS volunteer Soorya BS, who extended a warm welcome to the guest speaker and the gathering. The session focused on two key child protection laws in India: the Juvenile Justice Act, of 2015 and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POSCO) Act, of 2012. The Juvenile Justice Act 2015 emphasizes the care and protection of children in need, especially those who have suffered abuse or neglect. It highlights that children deprived of proper care are more likely to engage in criminal activities. The law acknowledges that emotional, mental, or physical abuse can drive children to commit crimes, and judges can treat a child as an adult if they have reached sufficient maturity.

The Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POSCO) Act 2012 aims to protect children from sexual assault, harassment, and pornography. It stresses that failing to report a crime disclosed by a child is an offense, underscoring the responsibility of individuals to safeguard children's rights. The session also highlighted the importance of the Child Helpline (1098) for reporting child abuse, labor, marriage, and other forms of exploitation.

The session concluded at 3:28 PM, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by NSS volunteer Ms. Aswathy Mohan, expressing gratitude to the guest speaker, the program officers, and all the attendees for their participation.
